The Tamworth Homeowner's Spring Cleaning Checklist (Inside & Out)

12 min read March 2026 Steven Foxall
Bright clean living room ready for spring

Right, let's talk about something every homeowner in Tamworth goes through. March rolls around, the clocks go forward, the sun comes out for more than twenty minutes, and suddenly you can see just how grubby everything actually is. That carpet you thought was fine all winter? Turns out it was just hiding in the dark. The driveway? Green as a bowling green, but nowhere near as charming. The gutters? Doing their best impression of a small pond. It's spring cleaning time, and if you live in Tamworth, Fazeley, Dosthill, or anywhere round here, this checklist is going to help you tackle every bit of it properly.

I've written this based on years of going into homes and businesses across the Midlands. I'll be straight with you about which jobs you can handle yourself and which ones are genuinely worth calling in a professional for. No hard sell, just honest advice.

Inside the House

Carpets: The Big One

Carpets take an absolute hammering over winter. You've got mud being tracked in from the garden, everyone's spending more time indoors, and the heating running non-stop dries out carpet fibres so they attract even more dust. By March, even a well-looked-after carpet is holding way more dirt than you'd ever guess. We see it all the time going into homes across Kettlebrook, Glascote, and Amington.

What you can do: Give every room a proper, thorough hoover. And I mean properly. Under the furniture, along the skirting boards, behind the door. Move the sofa, move the bed. You will be amazed (and probably a bit horrified) at what's lurking under there. Use the crevice tool on your vacuum to get right into the edges.

What's worth getting done professionally: A full hot-water extraction carpet clean. This is the one that actually pulls the dirt, bacteria, and allergens out from deep inside the carpet, not just what's sitting on the surface. Our 121°C steam cleaning kills 99.9% of bacteria, and most carpets are dry within 2 to 4 hours. If you've got kids, pets, or anyone in the house with allergies, this makes a genuine difference to the air quality in your home. Have a look at our price list for what to expect.

If you're going to get your carpets professionally cleaned, do it after you've done the rest of the spring clean. There's no point getting pristine carpets and then dragging furniture around and kicking up dust for the next two days. Learned that one the hard way from a customer in Wilnecote.

Upholstery: The One Everyone Forgets

Here's a question for you. Your sofa gets used every single day, right? Sometimes for hours at a stretch. But when was the last time it was actually cleaned? And I don't mean chucking the cushion covers in the washing machine. I'm talking about the actual fabric, the arms, the back, all those bits where crumbs and pet hair set up camp.

Fabric sofas quietly absorb body oils, sweat, food spills, and pet dander over time. You don't notice it because it happens so gradually. But if you took a clean white cloth, pressed it firmly onto your sofa arm and gave it a good rub, you'd be genuinely shocked at what comes off. Go on, try it. I'll wait.

What you can do: Vacuum the sofa thoroughly using the upholstery attachment. Get into every crevice between the cushions (brave yourself for what you find down there). If you've got removable covers, wash them according to the care label. Here's a good trick: sprinkle bicarbonate of soda on the fabric, leave it for 15 minutes, then vacuum it off. It does a brilliant job of absorbing odours.

What's worth getting done professionally: A proper upholstery clean using hot-water extraction. We adjust the temperature and cleaning solution based on the fabric type. Cotton, polyester, velvet, and leather all need different approaches. Most of our customers add a sofa clean when they're having their carpets done because the equipment's already there and it works out much cheaper as a bundle.

"I can not recommend this company enough. I was embarrassed with how bad my carpets and sofas were from having 3 dogs. The guys were so professional and friendly, and the results were absolutely incredible. Everything looks and smells brand new."- Jane Powell, Google Review

Hard Floors

Got tile, laminate, vinyl, or stone floors? Spring is the perfect time to give them a proper deep clean rather than just the usual once-over with a mop. Grout lines in particular love collecting dirt over winter and can start to look dark and manky. We see it a lot in kitchens and hallways across Tamworth, Lichfield, and Sutton Coldfield.

What you can do: For tile floors, a mixture of warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner works a treat. Avoid bleach on natural stone though, it can actually damage the surface. For grout, a stiff brush and a dedicated grout cleaner will make a noticeable difference. Laminate floors just need a damp (not wet, that's important) mop with a gentle cleaner.

What's worth getting done professionally: If your grout has gone dark or your stone floor has lost its shine, professional hard floor cleaning and sealing will bring it right back to life. We use specialised equipment that cleans and extracts simultaneously, so there's no excess water sitting on your floor causing problems.

Windows and Blinds

This one's entirely DIY territory, but don't underestimate the difference it makes. Clean windows let in so much more light, and that makes everything else in the house look better too. Don't forget the inside of the glass. Condensation over winter leaves a dull film that you stop noticing after a while, but once it's gone, it's like putting new bulbs in every room.

Blinds are absolute dust magnets. Wipe each slat with a damp cloth, or if they're really bad, take them down and give them a soak in the bath. Curtains can usually go in the washing machine on a gentle cycle, but check the label first. Nobody wants to explain to their other half why the curtains have shrunk three sizes.

Outside the House

Driveway and Patio

Right, this is the big one for kerb appeal. After a proper Tamworth winter, your driveway and patio will be covered in algae, moss, and a general layer of grime that makes the whole front of your house look tired. Block paving is especially bad because the joints trap moisture and give organic growth the perfect place to thrive.

What you can do: Sweep off the loose debris and pull out any weeds by hand. A stiff broom and some soapy water will shift surface dirt, but it won't touch the embedded algae or lichen. That stuff is properly dug in.

What's worth getting done professionally: A full driveway and patio pressure wash with re-sanding of the joints and optional biocide treatment. This is one of those jobs where the difference between DIY and professional is honestly night and day. We use commercial-grade rotary surface cleaners that give a perfectly even finish without the "zebra stripes" you get from a hand-held lance. The re-sanding stabilises the blocks and stops weed regrowth. Most customers find a professional clean lasts a good 2 to 3 years.

If you're thinking of selling your home, getting the driveway done before the estate agent takes photos is one of the cheapest ways to boost your kerb appeal. We've had customers in Amington, Glascote, and Wilnecote tell us their neighbours came knocking to ask who did their driveway because the transformation was so dramatic. That's always a nice bit of feedback to get.

Gutters: The Job Nobody Wants to Do

Out of sight, out of mind. That's gutters in a nutshell, until water starts cascading down the side of your house and you're Googling "emergency roofer" at 11pm. Gutters fill up with leaves, moss, and debris over autumn and winter, and by spring they're often completely blocked. In Tamworth and surrounding areas like Two Gates, Dosthill, and Burntwood, where we get our fair share of rainfall, blocked gutters can cause some serious problems:

Blocked gutter overflowing with moss and debris
Blocked gutters can cause damp, mould, and structural damage if left untreated.

What you can do: If you're comfortable on a ladder and your gutters are accessible, you can clear them out by hand. Wear gloves, because the sludge that comes out of gutters is properly unpleasant. Like, really grim. Check that the downpipes are clear by running water through them.

What's worth getting done professionally: If your gutters are high up, on a two-storey property, or you'd simply rather not risk life and limb on a ladder, we offer professional gutter clearing using specialist vacuum equipment that works from ground level. It's quick, it's safe, and we can show you before-and-after photos of what we've cleared out. Some of the things that come out of gutters would make a good horror film.

A good rule of thumb: get your gutters cleared at least once a year, ideally in spring after the last of the autumn leaves have finally come down. If you've got trees overhanging your roof, twice a year is sensible. Your walls will thank you for it.

External Walls and Render

If your house has rendered or pebble-dashed walls, have a good look for green algae growth, particularly on north-facing walls that don't get much sun. This is really common across Tamworth, Fazeley, and the wider Midlands. Left untreated, algae can permanently stain render and make your house look neglected, even if the rest of the place is spotless.

A soft wash (low-pressure cleaning with a biocide solution) is the safest way to clean rendered walls without damaging the surface. This really isn't a DIY job. Using a standard pressure washer on render can force water behind the surface and cause damp, which is the opposite of what you're trying to achieve.

The Spring Cleaning Schedule

If you're going to tackle the whole lot, here's the order I'd suggest. There's a method to this, I promise.

WeekTaskDIY or Pro?
Week 1Declutter every room, deep clean kitchen and bathroomsDIY
Week 1Clean all windows (inside and out), wash curtains and blindsDIY
Week 2Clear gutters and check downpipesPro recommended
Week 2Driveway and patio pressure wash + re-sandPro recommended
Week 3Professional carpet and upholstery cleaningPro recommended
Week 3Hard floor deep clean and grout cleaningDIY or Pro

The reason for this order is dead practical: you want to do the messy outdoor jobs first, then the indoor decluttering, and save the carpet and upholstery cleaning for last so you're not undoing all the hard work by dragging furniture around afterwards. Trust me, you don't want to be that person.

How Much Does a Full Spring Clean Cost?

Right, let's talk numbers. If you got a professional in for the big-ticket items (carpets, upholstery, driveway, and gutters), you'd be looking at roughly:

ServiceTypical Cost
Carpet cleaning (3-4 rooms)£99 - £160
Sofa cleaning (3-seater)£60 - £90
Driveway cleaning (medium)£250 - £400
Gutter clearing£75 - £120
Total£484 - £770

That might sound like a lot at first glance, but spread it across the year and it's less than £15 a week for a home that looks and feels properly maintained. And honestly, the difference it makes to how your place looks and smells is massive. If you bundle services together, most companies (including us) offer better rates than booking each one separately. Give us a shout for a quote and we'll see what we can put together for you.
